Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. Staff understood the importance of helping people to maintain their independence. One person told us, “They try to maintain my independence, for example they help me with my bath. I can run it but they help me get out of it. I can also get my own meals.” Another person said, “They make sure I’m safe with my bath and they help me cook and prepare food. I can’t think of anything they don’t help with. I call them my angels they are so bubbly. I feel totally safe with them. You actually feel like they really care.” A member of staff told us, “I always offer choice. I ask them if they would like a wash. If they decline I continue to ask and encourage and chat it all through with them. I continue to prompt and reassure them. We maintain independence where possible. I ask them to do what they can and they ask me to help them when they need me. I always offer choice.” A further member of staff told us, “I always give people choice, that is our priority. All decisions where they can, they [people] can make their own decisions and choices to keep their independence.” People’s care plans had up to date information to promote and maintain their independence. Staff were able to access people’s care plans and records through an independent application on their mobile phones. This ensured people’s records were up to date. Care plans and records were person centred and gave detail on people’s likes and dislikes and what they enjoyed doing.
