Our view of the service

Date of assessment 24 to 28 October 2024. Barton House is a residential care home providing support for up to 15 older people. There were 15 people living at the service at the time of this assessment. At our last inspection we found improvement was needed and the service was in breach of legal regulations in relation to safe care and treatment, and good governance. At this inspection we found improvements had been made in all areas, and the service was no longer in breach of legal regulation. People were protected from abuse and neglect and staff understood and managed risks well. The premises and equipment met the needs of people, were clean and well-maintained. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. People were involved in assessments of their needs and staff reviewed them regularly. People always had enough to eat and drink, and food preferences and allergies were catered for. Staff monitored people’s health to support healthy living. Staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent, and people’s rights were upheld in line with the Mental Capacity Act. People were treated with kindness and compassion and staff protected their privacy and dignity, treated them as individuals and supported their preferences. People were involved in decisions about their care and knew how to give feedback. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive, helping staff develop in their roles. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities and were clear about their areas of responsibility. There was a culture of continuous improvement with staff given time and resources to try new ideas.
