Kindness, compassion and dignity

Score: 3

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People told us staff treated them with kindness. One person said, “The staff are all wonderful, they can’t do enough for you.” Another person said, “They’re really good, lovely and cheery.” We saw positive interactions between staff and people, and staff took their time to reassure people and spend time with those who might otherwise be isolated. For example, we saw one staff member reading aloud to a person being cared for in bed. All the relatives we spoke to made positive comments about staff. One relative said, “The carers are always in a great mood and are great fun.” Another relative said, “They talk to [relative] with respect.” A staff member told us, “I always make time for the residents, and we have great chats.”

Treating people as individuals

Score: 3

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. People’s care plans contained good information about how to meet people’s needs, and staff knew people well. One relative told us, “The carers adapt things for her, and I think that’s really good.” A health professional commented, “Everything at Barton House is geared up to address each persons’ individual needs. Because of its size and the staff, it has a homely feel.”

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. One person told us, “There’s no restrictions, you can basically do what you want.” We saw people were free to choose where they spent their time, including where they ate their meals.
