Although staff had a good knowledge of people’s needs, the processes in place for assessing people’s needs did not always give staff the information they needed to safely support people. Staff worked effectively with people to ensure they provided care and treatment in line with their choices.

This service scored 71 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Assessing needs

Score: 2

Relatives told us they were involved in reviewing their family member’s care with staff. Their knowledge of their family member was used to support their care.

Staff told us they felt the information they needed to provide care for people was in their care plans. However, we found there were aspects of assessing people’s care which did not always support staff provide effective care.

The processes in place for assessing people's needs were not always robust. Some aspects of people’s care were recorded in one part of their care records but not reinforced in other areas of their plans. For example, one person was recorded as requiring specialist footwear in their care plan but there was not mention of this in their risk assessments. A further person required a specialist diet for an underlying medical condition, however, there was no risk assessment in place to guide staff as to the types of foods the person should be offered. Other areas of care for people did not have clear guidance for staff on how to effectively support the person. One person’s care plan showed they could breach personal space when talking to people. There was no guidance for staff on how to manage and prevent this behaviour.

Relatives we spoke with felt staff provided people with the information they needed to make choices about their care. One relative said, “[Name] has their choices and I feel it (Bumblebee Lodge) is their home and they get the choices about how they want to spend their day. (Staff) work to make sure they offer choices in a way [Name] can understand.

Staff were clear about how they would support people if they refused care and treatment. They discussed the use of communication methods to match the individual’s communication abilities and showed a good understanding of people’s rights to refuse any care and how they would record and manage this.

There were processes in place for staff to follow if a person refused care. Records showed who they should involve to support people.
