People and their relatives told us they felt safe being supported by staff. One person said, ‘‘I like it here. Feels relaxed. It's good.’’ A relative told us, ‘‘I feel like [family member] is in a very safe and stable place at the service. They have lived there a long while and we have never had to worry.’’

Staff were trained in safeguarding and knew what signs may indicate people were not safe. The registered manager spoke about safeguarding with staff in team meetings and supervisions.

People were happy and relaxed being supported by staff. One person was becoming upset, and staff were quick to speak with them and help them to feel better. Processes were in place to safeguard people. There was a safeguarding policy that was well understood and followed by the staff team. Incidents were reported to the local authority safeguarding team if this was necessary. Any safeguarding incidents were reviewed by the registered manager and staff team so lessons could be learned.

One person said, ‘‘The staff are good, enough of them alright.’’ A relative told us, ‘‘There always seems to be enough staff when I visit the service, and I do not think [family member] ever has to wait long if they need anything.’’ Relatives also told us they felt staff were well trained to support their family members. One relative told us, ‘‘[Staff] know exactly what to do when [situation happens]. I think the training is really good.’’

Staff told us about the training they had to make sure they were skilled in their job roles and how they used this training on a day-to-day basis. Staff were happy with the current staffing levels and told us they had time to spend time interacting and engaging with people as well as supporting them with their essential needs. The registered manager held supervisions and completed competency assessments with staff to help them continually improve. For example, one person was supported to go shopping and told us, ‘‘I loved it.’’ Another person became upset, and staff supported them to feel better immediately. We observed staff supporting people in line with best practice they learned in their training. For example, staff spoke with people in short sentences offering one or two choices to help support people make choices more easily.
