People were protected from abuse and neglect and staff understood and managed risks well. The premises and equipment met the needs of people, and were clean and well-maintained. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience. People were involved in assessments of their needs and staff reviewed them regularly. People always had enough to eat and drink, and food preferences and allergies were catered for. Staff monitored people’s health to support healthy living and staff made sure people understood their care and treatment to enable them to give informed consent. Peoples’ rights were upheld in line with the Mental Capacity Act. People were treated with kindness and compassion and staff protected their privacy and dignity, treated them as individuals and supported their preferences. People were involved in decisions about their care and knew how to give feedback. Leaders and staff had a shared vision and culture based on listening, learning and trust. Staff understood their roles and responsibilities and were clear about their areas of responsibility. There was a culture of continuous improvement with staff given time and resources to try new ideas.

A relative said, “[Name] is very happy and contented. She is well looked after and completely safe there.” All of the people we spoke with were happy with the care they received and felt their needs were met. I couldn't think of a better place to be, if I can't be at home”, “I love the carers. They're so nice to me”, “The carers are lovely. I am just so grateful for them and the care they provide” and “The carers are always there if she needs them. They keep an eye on Mum the whole time, so I think they are competent at what they do and care about my Mum.” The service had sought feedback via a questionnaire. All of the responses received were positive. One relative commented, “Mums care at Barton Lodge is exceptional, all the staff are lovely, they care for mum with empathy and compassion. Since being at Barton Lodge we have seen mum improving. We see her laughing and smiling with all the staff."
